The Post Office will carry out audits of its 12,000 or so branches at any time. If it finds money missing it will prosecute the Sub Post Masters who have responsibility for the branch’s assets for theft. Many in this position have pleaded the case for errors within the Post Office’s computerised Horizon Accounting System. In such cases, Mark Jenner & Co has been asked to examine branch accounts and compare transactions to the historical archives submitted through the Horizon system – in two out of three cases we have seen there was not enough evidence to prove theft taking place resulting in no case to answer.
